Hair Clipper Guard Sizes: Choosing the Right Cutting Length
Guide combs control how much hair reaches the blade. Check the marked length and model fit, then work from longer lengths toward shorter ones.
Read the length, not just the number
A haircut number is shorthand for a guard setting, while the millimeter or inch marking states its nominal cutting length. Numbering and available lengths can vary across systems. Use the markings and manual supplied with your own kit rather than assuming a numbered comb from another brand leaves exactly the same length.
Start longer and inspect a small area
If you are unsure of the result, begin with a longer comb on a small, visible area. Keep the comb in contact with the head and move steadily without forcing the blade. Check how the hair settles before changing to a shorter setting. Curly hair, growth direction, and pressure can change the visible result.
Understand the taper lever
On a clipper with an adjustable taper lever, opening the lever generally leaves more length than closing it with the same comb attached. The adjustment range depends on the blade and model. A lever can help blend between settings, but it does not replace every missing comb. Check your manual before attempting a close fade.
Use small changes when blending a fade
Plan where the longer top and shorter sides should meet. Change one setting at a time so you can see what each pass removes. Work slowly around a transition line and check symmetry in a mirror. For your first fade, keep the outline conservative; repeated short passes give you more control than removing a large amount at once.
Match the guard to the clipper
Clipper combs and trimmer combs are not automatically interchangeable. Confirm the fit on the exact tool with the power off and check that the attachment locks into place. If a comb moves, cracks, or does not fit securely, stop using it. FADEKING manuals are organized by ASIN so you can check the right kit before ordering an accessory.
